The 1st typhoon of 2025, "Wutip" (named after the Cantonese word for "butterfly"), has formed. 

According to meteorological reports, the eye of the typhoon was located at 16.8°N and 112.4°E (in the western part of the South China Sea, just near Yongxing Island in Sansha City, Hainan Province) at June 11 by 2:00 pm, with windspeeds reaching level 8 (18 m/s) and the air pressure hitting lows of 993hPa near the center. 

Weather satellite imaging shows Wutip moving in a west-northwest direction at a speed of 10-15 km/h, increasing in strength as it draws closer to the southeast coast of Hainan Island. It is estimated to make landfall along the coast sometime on June 13, with winds estimated to pick up to level 10-12 (25-33 m/s) by that time. 

Between late on June 11 and June 13, most parts of Hainan Island are expected to experience heavy rainfall, with torrential rain in some parts and coastal gusts reaching level 8-11 (17-32 m/s) throughout.

In anticipation of expected conditions, some train services to and from the Chinese mainland have been cancelled from June 12-14. At-risk scenic areas, including Wuzhizhou Island in Sanya and Nanwan Monkey Island in Lingshui, have already suspended operations.

 

As Wutip approaches, the Hainan International Media Center would like to remind you to rearrange the travel plans and remain indoors where possible until conditions are safe. Please avoid areas experiencing torrential rain or otherwise affected by the typhoon, particularly coastal and mountainous areas where the risk to life is greatest. If you are currently in such areas, please evacuate to safety at the earliest opportunity.
